Why My Kids Play Sports

I always said I would not be the parent that makes my kid play a sport. I would let them choose. But now I’m a parent and that has changed. In this case I’m talking about my son. So yes, I WILL make him play sports.

And here’s why:

He’s talented. He has a natural athletic ability. Things come fairly easy to him and for him not to play that talent would be wasted. If he couldn’t throw a ball or run in a straight line then okay. But he can. And most days he does it well. Why would someone that can sing like an angel not sing?  You wouldn’t want that talent wasted.

He HAS to be doing something. Anything. But he can’t do nothing. Because what happens when a kid gets the freedom to do whatever they want?  Most of them would rather be lazy or play video games or watch tv. Not so bad BUT lazy kids turn into lazy teens turn into lazy adults. I will only allow productive people to be in my house. Lazy isn’t allowed.

As long as he is playing sports he doesn’t have time to do other things. I played sports until I tore my ACL.  After that I realized how much of my time sports was taking up. So then I rehabbed and have all this free time so what did I find to fill that up?  New friends and boyfriends!  If Nick is playing sports it will keep him from having free time. I’ll know all his friends and all their parents. I have control.

There are more reasons why I choose to make my kid play sports. And this goes for my daughter too. She dances and cheers. We are the parents and we make the decisions. I cringe when parents say their kid “refuses” to do something. They CAN do that but you have made it to where they know they can. They don’t respect you. All you have to do for your child is feed them and send them to school. You don’t have to give them nice clothes or take them to do fun things. You can take those things away. Don’t let them rule your house.  And don’t let them be lazy.

Before I get mouth saying all kids aren’t athletic and blah blah blah know that I get that. It doesn’t have to be a sport. If your kid can only weave baskets then make them join a basket weaving team!  Find what they’re good at and make. Then. Do it.
